There are now increased social and industrial demands for multimodal interactive technologies and advanced man-machine interfaces. Statistical modelling and computational learning is beginning to play an increasingly important role in their development. The objective of this theme is to explore the opportunities and challenges entailed by adapting conventional techniques to multimodal interactive systems.
A main application area of the MLMI Thematic Programmme is the VideoLectures.NET repository. A critical issue that has been highlighted by VideoLectures.NET is the need for tools that can enable location, access and repackaging of the component videos in order to give users the most appropriate material in a staged and accessible fashion. This need will be tackled by the MLMI Thematic Programme in the broader context of advanced man-machine interfaces.
